What’s in a chair? Just last week I was privileged enough to attend a church service in which Pastor Marcos Witt the Spanish congregation Pastor for Lakewood Church in Houston spoke for the very first time after going through a long period of recovery. Last summer Pastor Witt shattered both of his ankles and his femurs when he landed on a sand bar while on a diving trip with his family…
something that he said that night while speaking really struck a chord in me. He went on to tell us a little about how difficult the recovery process was and stated how he had an all-new respect for people that are confined to wheelchairs. Pastor Witt had always understood that being in a wheelchair was difficult, what he had never realized was the amount of people that have no regard for those in wheelchairs…. Over his nine months in a wheelchair he had been pushed countless times and nearly hit by cars on multiple occasions.
So what is in a chair? The answer is simple really, its life, its freedom. I have heard countless people over the years how a wheelchair really is “their legs”. So often because of the business of life and the pace in which so many of us live we fail to realize this. Please understand this is not a message intended to make you feel sorry for anyone. Some of the strongest most productive people I know are in wheelchairs and their drive, determination and performance is second to none. This is however a message to increase awareness, self awareness as a leader in our community in all things Health and Mobility we at BEK Medical ask you to be aware of yourself. Be aware of those around you that are using mobility products such as scooters, wheelchairs, walkers and canes. At times awareness means holding open a door, to others it might mean allowing enough space between you and the car next to you, keeping an eye out when going through parking lots or busy intersections. You see to you its just a chair, or a walker, to those that rely on them its life, its freedom…
