Focus on the Family- Tides of Change

It has been nearly ten years since the commercial ran, but amidst all of our most fun commercials, beyond the Grinch commercial, the race commercial and all for the others, there is one that particularly stands out in my mind.  Some of you may have seen it, remember I said it was almost ten years ago that it aired so if you weren’t paying attention then let me give you the low down.  The commercial was called “Its My Turn”  the commercial focused on the importance of children providing care for their parents, having taken care of my grandmother as a teenager I realize how unbelievably honest that commercial was.  You see my grandmother and I were terribly close…

I remember spending the night at her house when I was a child and I remember visiting her every Sunday afternoon.  As a child everything in her home felt so large, unusually large for some reason.  I remember spending time with her while she knitted and anxiously waiting when she hopped behind a stove, certain that I would love whatever came of the occasion.  I remember the smell of the very laundry detergent she used… odd I know but smelling it today puts a smile on my face every time.  I was fourteen when she passed and I remember it so clearly.  We had tried assisted living and even nursing homes, and we visited her every day, but it just wasn’t enough, after trying a few alternatives we decided it was best to have her home so we did just that.  We prepared a room for her obtained a hospital bed, oxygen supplies among other things and brought her home.  Over the next few months, we experienced so many different things with her from having to fee her through a G-Tube to constant movement to prevent pressure soars and even incontinence.  My grandmother had done everything she could to show us love, my mom was amazing taking care of her even though it broke us all to see her that way we did all that we could to make her as comfortable as possible.  Why would I share all this?  My answer is simple…Grace, you see grace has given me the opportunity to take that experience and share it with others, share it in a way that makes me understand what so many of our customers are going through, it is not easy… it warrants saying it again, it is not easy.  Now whenever I see or remember the commercial “Its my Turn” I remember the struggles, but more than anything I remember a woman that worked hard for us, as my mom and dad get older, I have chosen to be proactive.  I’m fully prepared mentally and spiritually to be the caregiver form my parents, they gave us a beautiful childhood and someday it will be my turn to repay the patience, the love, the hard work and the sleepless nights…  they endured it all for me as a child, and as their child I choose to endure it all for them someday.
